A day filled with historic attractions. First is MOUNT VERNON, the beloved home of George and Martha Washington, overlooking the banks of the Potomac River. Then, on to Yorktown on the York River, and a visit to YORKTOWN HISTORICAL BATTLEFIELD PARK, where the British surrendered to Washington’s troops, bringing an end to the American Revolution on October 19, 1781. Late-afternoon arrival in Williamsburg.
|Day 4Williamsburg. Excursion to Jamestown Settlement & Colonial Williamsburg
A morning visit to nearby JAMESTOWN SETTLEMENT for a guided tour to learn about the first permanent English settlement in the New World. The rest of the day is dedicated to COLONIAL WILLIAMSBURG, where American heritage is proudly preserved in the reconstructed buildings and historical displays. Stroll down quaint streets and browse through homes, gardens, taverns, shops, and exhibits. In the Hall of Burgesses, listen as costumed interpreters debate the controversial steps that led to the Declaration of Independence.

Drive westward to Richmond, once the capital of the Confederacy, for a short sightseeing tour. See Monument Avenue, the White House of the Confederacy, the State Capitol, and ST. JOHN’S CHURCH, where Patrick Henry proclaimed, “Give me liberty or give me death!” Before arriving in Charlottesville, we visit the graceful home of the third U.S. President, Thomas Jefferson. The MONTICELLO ESTATE reflects Jefferson’s skills as an artist, architect, and designer. A guided visit features the impressive mansion designed by Jefferson himself. Head for HARPERS FERRY NATIONAL HISTORICAL PARK, where in 1859 John Brown made his ill-fated raid on the U.S. Arsenal. A visit to this quaint, historic community is like stepping into the past. Cross the Mason-Dixon Line into Pennsylvania, with a late-afternoon arrival in Gettysburg. Tonight we offer an optional outing to a local restaurant to enjoy the flavor of the area.

Enjoy a tour of Gettysburg and hear your Local Guide vividly recount the battle. Also spend some time exploring the newly renovated museum and cyclorama. Through Pennsylvania Dutch Country to Lancaster County, home of the religious Amish and Mennonite sects. Stop at the AMISH FARM & HOUSE, where a Local Guide explains the faith, culture, and way of life of these people, for whom tradition forbids the use of electricity or telephones in the home.
